Ways To Set a Regimen for Your Hair

Hey guys. This is an old post. Somewhat. Today we’d be discussing hair regimen.

We’ve all heard say “oh natural hair is stressful” “I don’t have time to take care of natural hair” and so on. And We all know handling natural hair can be really tiring and stressful to handle sometimes. So what should we do to fix this problem? We fix a regimen/schedule for hair care. So that we have time for it while it doesn’t affect our day to day life and activities.

Setting a regimen can be difficult at first but once you get consistent, it gets easy and it’ll be like brushing your teeth every morning. Plus once you know what your hair likes and needs, it also makes things really quick and easy for you.

So how do we set a regimen?
We look at our activities…like a 9-5 or 7/8-5/6 if it’s school or bank jobs or other jobs that require you to leave home early and come back late. If it’s that way, one should do most things at night so it’s easy to style and just leave the house in the morning. I’m going to give an example of a regimen below.

Daily Care
Night – moisturize (LOC/LCO) hair at night. Put hair in huge twists or braids or a band the hair (using Rubber or foamy bands to stretch), wear satin Bonnet and sleep.

Morning – massage a little coconut oil/palm kernel/almond oil in palms, then “untwist”, loosen, “unband” hair and style in whatever style you choose.

If you have issues styling, you could just do mini or tiny twists on Saturday/Sunday, carry the whole week. Only thing is you’d have to Moisturise and seal at night or in the morning.

haair-lifemag
You can cowash (washing hair with conditioner only) once or twice a week and do a light moisturizing deep conditioning r honey and coconut oil right after. Wash with Shampoo and conditioner twice a month, protein treatment right after (once a month)  and a moisturizing deep conditioning (twice a month) too. This should be done on weekends, obviously. Prepoo should be done before wash day and hot oil treatments can be done once a week. Like Friday nights into Saturday morning. And also protective styles help manage your hair for you. Like braids, weaves, twists, crochet braids, locs. But it’s necessary to not leave in protective styles in too long as they may cause breakage and dryness. It’s also necessary to care for your hair while it’s in a protective style.

If you need a solid regimen, find out what your hair likes, stick with it, it gets really easy over time. Also you should take a mini spray bottle with you to work, so you can always spritz when necessary. Always wear a  satin bonnet or scarf at night before you sleep so it’ll prevent breakage and split ends also so you dont lose Any moisture that you’ve kept in your hair.

Natural hair doesn’t have to be a problem. Once you know your hair, everything else falls into place. I hope this has helped in some way. Any questions can be directed to the comments section or on Twitter (@Abebiorganics).

Until next time, peace, love and carefree hair. We all know handling natural hair can be really tiring and stressful. So what should we do to fix this problem? We fix a regimen/schedule for hair care. So that we have time for it while it doesn’t affect our day to day life and activities.

AVOCADO’S AMAZINGNESS

Hi guys. Peju here. I know y’all missed me. Hope everyone is great and your hair is flourishing and also healthy..

To the post of today.. The last time I was here, I spoke about how I was experiencing terrible hair breakage and how I’ve been trying to treat it. Well oh well.. I am pleased to announce that my hair is no longer breaking… Wooooosshhhhh.. And it’s all thanks to that special fruit called AVOCADO! you see guys, I’ve never eaten an avocado and I’m not even sure why I started to use it on my hair but my gosh guys, it has done wonders for my hair.

I started using avocados on my hair early in my hair journey and it was good for it. Soft manageable hair, no breakage, lush as hell.. Then I got lazy and also I stopped finding it at the market and then school came into play and so I started to use store bought deep conditioner on my hair. Big mistake. But anyway I’m back to using avocados. I’ll definitely use other things along with it but it has to be present in My routine. I did a one month avocado journey to see how my hair reacts. The first week, I used An overripe avocado, an overripe banana, honey and my oil mix. Will tell you what’s in my mix soon. Second week, I used an avocado, egg, honey and my oil mix,  this was basically a protein treatment which Is necessary. Third week I used an avocado, my store bought deep conditioner whose name I can’t remember right now  (i’m writing this at school, will check and take a picture when I’m home), my oil mix and honey. For the fourth week, I used an avocado, honey and the oil mix. Let’s get to it.

First week.

1 Avocado (overripe)

1 Banana (overripe)

Honey – 2tsps

Oil mix – 2tsps

Do I need to explain the process of deep conditioning? Okay I used my aunt Jackie shampoo and vo5 rinse out conditioner to wash. I didn’t prepoo, hair wasn’t so tangled plus laziness. Blended all my ingredients together. Applied to my hair, root to tip, every corner. Covered with shower cap. And used my hair steamer. Let it stay an hour then I rinsed out thoroughly. Scalp was a little itchy, yes I suffer from itchy scalp. Used dark and lovely leave in and Abebi Organics hair batter to moisturize and seal in moisture. Itch relaxed.  Hair felt so soft afterwards. Had no issues combing. It felt so lush and I didn’t see much breakage. I was so happy. Styled my hair and went about my business.

Second week.

1 overripe avocado

1 egg

2 tsps honey

2 tsps oil mix

Blended and applied After wash and condition.

Let it stay for 30 minutes because I don’t want egg to fry in my hair.

Thought my hair will be stiff afterwards because of the protein but it balanced out because of the honey and avocado and was actually soft. A little shedding. Hair texture felt and looked really good. Moisturised and sealed as usual. Also this time I used shampoo from Abebi organics and I noticed it was better for my hair as there was no itch and it actually softened my hair. My hair is usually stiff After wash with other shampoos but it didn’t feel that way with the shampoo.

Third week

1 overripe avocado

A chunk of my store bought deep conditioner

2tsps honey and oil mix

Hair felt really soft afterwards. No breakage. A little shedding. Easy to detangle and comb. Hair felt  fuller  and I think my hair even grew an inch. Texture was great. No limpness. No itch. I was happy. My hair was happy.

Last week.

One overripe avocado

Honey and oil mix.

Hair felt so soft and good I was almost crying. Oiled my scalp with my oil mix.  Also I did a protective style (braids) 2 days after this treatment and I enjoyed having someone else comb my hair. Usually I do it myself cos they make me cry when they comb my hair. But it was nice for someone else to do it. No pain or discomfort. Argh avocado is great you guys. There was also no breakage. I made sure to check when she was done. Safe to say I’m free from the bondage of breakage.

I did this avocado journey in the month of April and I hope to do it again once I take my braids out. I’m going to find new recipes or experiment with new recipes that involve avocados and update you guys with the results. I’m so happy that my strong ass nappy hair is soft, lush and combable and she’s growing. I’ve decided to not trim again till December. Ima let her grow out. I hope this post helps someone that reads it here. Thank you guys for always reading my hair rants.

I’ll be needing suggestions, comments and questions. If you want to buy anything from Abebi organics, their twitter and instagram is @AbebiOrganics. As always, peace, love and lush natural hair!

My Hair Struggles 2

So I obviously have a lot to get off my mind. I’m just gonna ramble about the few other struggles I have. Need to put them down before I get lazy and forget again. Let’s get down to it, shall we? Also I’d love If you guys can share your struggles In the comments section and also tell me if you can relate with mine. That’ll be very nice if you guys indulge me. Please do. Thank you.

Number one is.. Pulling my hair. I don’t even know if I should call it pulling or playing but I can’t seem to get my hands out of my hair. Once I’m in deep thought or I’m watching TV and my hands are free, they are in my hair scratching the scalp or pulling strands (this leafs to pulling out or cutting the hair), it’s a terrible terrible habit and IDK how to stop. It’s driving my crazy. Putting my hair in protective styles does help as it keeps the hair away from my hands for a bit but as soon as my hair is out, it resumes work. It’s one of the reasons I’ve decided to put my hair in protective styles all year but I’m also trying to deep condition regularly. Sigh. Struggle.

Number two is.. Satin bonnets. This is so frustrating. The regular satin bonnets that every natural uses is no longer in Lagos I think. I can’t find it online and I can’t find it in casabella. They only have the scarf version which leaves my hair before morning. And then the other types I’ve gotten either let moisture leak or slack on time. It’s so frustrating. Atleast the regular one doesn’t slack till after 4/5 months. I need them back on the market. I hear they’re about 2500 now though. Imagine. From 800 naira. Struggle.

Third one is, styling my hair. Man I used to be so good at styling my hair. I even got msgs asking about styles and how I style my hair but now it seems the spirit has left my body. I’m always so clueless as to how to or what to style my hair. And my twist out’s are now a huge struggle. Me that my twists outs used to be so dope and beautiful now it’s meh, always failing. What do I do guys?? I need inspiration I guess.. And commitment. I’ll work on it.

Number four. Edges. My edges never stay laid. And Lord, do I hate edge control. And even with edge control, the stubborn hair still pops up after a few hours. Why please?  Is there a way I can make them stay laid without edge control? Lol. I was thinking of making flax seed gel to help. Haven’t had the time yet. I guess that’s my solution.

People say natural hair is stress but to be honest, every hair type is stress. These are a few of my annoying hair struggles. Let me know yours in the comments section. If I remember more, i’ll edit this post and add to it. As always, slay!

My Hair Struggles

Hi guys. *coughs* this place is so dusty wow. Being a while. A long while. I hope you guys missed me. I feel like a fraud. How do I have a blog I don’t bother to write in anymore? This is so unfair to you guys. I am so so so sorry. My life is just a rollercoaster of different things right now. I’ll try my best to fix up. So yes..

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Since this is my first post this year, that is quite apt. Alot has happened since the last time I updated this blog. I’ll gist you guys now. I hope everyone’s doing well and hair is Flourishing? It’s a different case for me.
Well since early last year, my hair has been breaking like crazy. I ignored it because I had school and didn’t really have time for it. So I just abandoned and felt.. Oh well.. It’ll stop breaking when it’s tired. Also I stopped doing DIY because school.. Didn’t have a blender, didn’t find the fruits I used at home Eg avocado in ilorin. I was so frustrated and just gave up. Deep conditioned with egg honey and coconut oil anytime I remembered to.

In August, I got fed up. I needed a solution. And I had come home for a 3 month holiday. I started to DC every 2 weeks. I used coconut milk mostly in my routine, did little for my hair, softened it though, but the breakage persisted. In September I decided to start trimming. In December, it had reduced but it still persisted. I checked online what could be the problem. Stumbled on a YouTuber  who said she had to cut off coconut oil from her hair routine. My hair, apart from the breakage, dried out easily, didn’t hold in moisture, felt stringy and was tough. She explained her hair had these issues too so I could relate. She said once she cut off coconut oil, it reduced the issues. Voila! I thought I’d found a solution. So I quit coconut oil.

If you know me well, you know Coconut oil is my thing. I soak myself In coconut oil. It was my hair’s breakfast lunch and dinner. It was really hard letting go, but I had to,  I had to. And it did help. For softer, less stringy hair holds in moisture, breakage reduced (I still trimmed every month) so I was happy. I’m still not using coconut oil in my hair. Although I got this deep conditioner AUNT JACKIE’S FIX MY HAIR INTENSIVE DEEP CONDITIONER, which contains coconut oil, got it in January so obv I was doing myself but I was going back to school and I knew I wouldn’t have time to DIY so.. I needed it. The deep conditioner was good for my hair. The breakage actually chilled. Of which I wasn’t dcing as often as I wanted cos my hair was mostly in protective styles but it did help. I was still trimming too. So right now, there’s no more colour in my hair and I’ve cut off about 7 inches which is sad but it’ll grow back

So anyways, I’m home now and I’ve deep conditioned once with my avocado, banana, honey and mix of oils deep conditioner, no coconut oil involved and now, there’s hardly any breakage. I do want to continue so I’m hoping to get a blender before I go back to uni and look for where to find avocados over there. I’m deep conditioning again with an avocado tomorrow and this time I’d include an egg for protein (protein treatment is good once a month to strengthen the hair), my hair loves avocados.  I’m trying to be better at moisturising so my hair doesn’t dry out and break (I also stopped moisturising in school. Terrible)  my hair was amazing when I was obsessed with keeping it healthy and that’s what I’m trying to do again. Not going to let uni get in the way again.

So I made my hair batter (you can order it) with no coconut oil, replaced coco oil with palm kernel oil (the one available for sale does contain both oils) and my hair oil too (this isn’t available to the public, you can order it, it can be custom made for you), they have really helped in the growth and health of my hair. You wont even notice I’ve been trimming. Lowkey transitioned. I’d still trim once every few months. It’s a necessity, to cut off dead ends so new fresh hair can grow. This has been my struggle for a year now and I’m glad it’s coming to an end. So so happy. I’m so sorry this is mighty long. I had a lot to get off my chest.

Please feel free to share your hair struggles with me. I’d try to the best of my ability to respond and help any way I can. This experience has helped me learn new things about my hair and I’m grateful for that. I’d love to see your comments and suggestions. Look out!

Have a happy rest of the week guys. Let your hair slay. You too x

TIPS TO REDUCE BREAKAGE WHEN TAKING DOWN YOUR BRAIDS

Hey guys. It’s Friday!!!!! How many of us are turning up tonight? Please come and take me with you. Lol. Anyways today I want to drop a few helpful tips on how to prevent breakage when taking down your braids. Some of us may still experience breakage but these tips will help prevent them from being too much. So let’s get to it, shall we?

1. Do not keep your braids in for too long. 4-6 weeks. 6 weeks tops. Know your limit. Keeping braids in too long weakens your own hair and in turn leads to it breaking.

2. Condition your hair before the take down. Either use a leave in like dark and Lovely leave in or a rinse out conditioner like VO5. I’ll suggest a rinse out conditioner mostly. This helps softens the brittleness of the hair and reduces or prevents breakage.

3. Loosen your hair with a rat tail comb. Don’t comb it out. The hair is already stressed from the protective style, don’t stress it more.

4. Soften hair with oils or leave in conditioner when loosened, so they’re slippery and soft and this helps prevents (too much) breakage.

5. Keep your hair and scalp moisturised. Also finger detangle. Do not use a comb to detangle. Work those fingers. They know your hair best.

6. Prepoo and wash!

I hope these few points have helped in some way. Please use these tips and get back to me with results. Drop your comments and suggestions. Ask any questions you like too. Till another time, peace… Love… And conditioned hair.

Shea Butter Goodness

Hi guys. I know you missed me. School took me away. I hope everyone’s great and our hair’s flourishing? Mine has been in faux Locs since May. Haven’t had time for her 😦
To the business of the day. I’ve always wanted to write about Shea butter and it’s everlasting goodness and finally I’m getting to it.

How many of us use Shea butter? Raise your hands!!!!

image

Shea butter is gotten from the Shea karite Tree and has been used for centuries in/for beauty, cosmetic and household areas. It is an amazing moisturiser for the skin and a great conditioner for the hair. It softens our hair so fast you’d be wondering if it was magic.

Let’s talk about the use of Shea butter for the hair before we delve into others.

image

-Shea butter helps to soothe irritated scalp.
It helps soothe and heal dandruff and dry irritated scalp. It also helps provide moisture from root to tip for the hair. It’s great for all hair types. You can massage it directly to your scalp or you can dampen your scalp a bit and apply. You can also mix with tea tree oil for added measure.

-Shea butter helps to protect your hair and scalp from UV rays. It contains sufficient SPF for the protection of your hair against the damage of the UV rays. Use it when moisturising your hair. The last thing during the LOC.

– Yes Shea butter is a great sealant. LOC method. The C is the Shea butter.

– Shea butter helps repair and rejuvenate weak hair follicles over time. And also helps grow your hair!

– Shea butter as I said earlier is a great conditioner which makes it a hair softener. If you’re looking for something to soften your tough natural hair, shea butter is the way to go. It locks in moisture and it doesn’t leave the hair feeling greasy or heavy. It’s also easily absorbed by the hair.

I use Shea butter during deep conditioning too. And

image

it’s actually great. I melt it first before adding it to my DC mix. And trust me, my hair comes out feeling very very soft, moisturised and conditioned afterwards.

Now that we’ve sorted the uses for hair, let’s move to other things we can use Shea butter for.
– it heals eczema, dermatitis, dry skin, skin peeling, skin cracks, skin rash, frostbite, insect bites, skin rash.
– it also helps when you have a burn.. Like mild hot water burn, it soothes and heals it. Hot oil burns too. This one works for me. When I’m cooking and hot water/oil splashes on me, I rinse with cold water and immediately apply Shea butter.. Few hours later, skin is back to A+
– It softens hard and touch skin on the feet. Should be used after pedicures. It’ll soften your soles and they’ll feel like a baby’s bum. If your soles are tough and rough, apply Shea butter.
– Also helps with skin allergies, blemishes and wrinkles. Reduces stretchmarks overtime too.
– helps with sunburns and can be used as an aftershave for smooth skin.
– Best for baby’s skin too. Mix with an oil like grapeseed or coconut for your baby.
Really I apply Shea butter to everything. It’s even a painkiller lol

This is everything I can think of right now and what I use it for. If you know or If you use it in any other way that’s not here, please let me know in the comment section. Your suggestions are highly needed. If you have any questions, you can ask here or on twitter (@kinkyparadiseng)
Don’t stop using Shea butter and please get non-adulterated natural raw shea butter. If you don’t know where to get raw shea butter from, I can hook you up. Let me know.

COMMON NATURAL HAIR MYTHS

Hi guys. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!  I know I’ve been MIA, I’m so sorry,  life got in the way but I promise to do better. At least one post every month. Please bear with me. Before I go further, please check out our twitter (@kinkyparadiseng) for hair tips and tricks,  also our instagram (same as twitter) to peruse natural hair pictures and style inspirations. You can also send in your own pictures for a feature (kinkyparadiseng@gmail.com)

Since we have that settled,  let’s move on. This afternoon I want to talk about natural hair myths,  these myths have been peddled around everywhere and I think they’ve caused more harm than good so let’s address them. If there are any myths you want me to address also,  please mail them in.

1. Water Dries Out Natural Hair: This is a big fat lie. Water is the best moisturiser for natural hair so the myth about it being drying isn’t true at all. A good moisturiser has water as its first ingredient. So yeah,  water up and seal with an oil/butter.

2. Natural hair is strong: Actually it’s very fragile. And it should be handled with the utmost care. It may feel or look strong,  but it really isn’t. Our hair breaks real easy because of the kinks and coils so it’s actually not strong.

3. Natural hair Doesn’t Grow: This is untrue. Because of the kinks and coils,  our hair shrinks a great deal,  which makes it look like its not growing but it really is. In fact the more the coils and kinks, the more it grows and the more it shrinks. You can do a length check every few months to see your progress. Natural hair grows, long. Longer than you can imagine. Just take care of it and it’ll shock you.

4. Natural hair is Difficult to handle : Also a silly myth. Yes natural hair care does require patience and time but it’s not difficult to handle. Once you understand your hair,  it’s needs and you set a regimen for yourself,  every other thing falls into the right place.

5. Relaxer Helps Hair Grow: False. You realise if we relax,  we always need to retouch after every 6-8 weeks,  well that’s new growth which is natural hair and it isn’t the work of the relaxer. Relaxer only helps to change texture and curl patterns. From kinky to straight. It doesn’t grow hair.

6. Trimming hair helps hair grow: No it doesn’t. All trimming does is help get rid of split ends. Cutting off of split ends stop breakage and encourage new growth. But just regular trimming (not split ends) doesn’t grow your hair,  you’re just trimming.

7. Don’t ever Straighten Natural hair: No this is false. You can straighten natural hair. It’s overdoing it that breaks and damages the hair. And if you want to straighten,  take proper precaution, a protein treatment before, condition and moisturise, use heat protestants and use a blowdryer with a comb attachment,  so you’re not applying heat directly to your hair. I’d advise once a month or once every 2/3 months.

8. You Can’t comb Natural hair: this one bursts my head cos it’s so untrue. Of course we comb our hair. We just don’t comb it dry (natural hair Not torture please). We comb our hair wet,  with water and leave in conditioner in it. And we comb in sections. I particularly enjoy other people combing my hair. Sends me to sleep straight! Lol

9. Natural hair results in Dreadlocks: Also very false. No. No. Our hair doesn’t become dreads,  except that’s what we want and are going for. Else it’s just hair.  Comb -able hair. It’s not dreads. Please stop asking that question. Lol this is actually a little personal Cos people see me in twist out’s and go like “is your hair dreads?  Your dada is fine o” no it’s not dreads. Ehen.

10. Women with natural hair can’t or shouldn’t do protective styles : Eh. Please shut up. What do you mean by that? Why can’t we?  Naturalistas even rock protective styles better. Oya cry. We can fix, braid, do faux locs,  crochet braids,  twist etc in fact locs and crochet braid was stolen from us LMAO because we like to experiment with styles. So Naturalistas can rock protective style well. It protects our hair and helps it grow,  and gives us a little break from our hair. Please don’t ask us if we’ve relaxed our hair just because you see a protective style on our head. Noted?  Good.

11. Natural hair isn’t for the work place : You say? Abeg abeg abeg. Go and check @kinkyparadiseng on instagram, and see plenty styles that can be rocked to work. Yes. Like bank,  hospitals, all those big big companies. We can rock out natural hair to work well. Our hair is very versatile. So we can make it into any and everything. We have work, party,  house etc styles. So please don’t tell us that.

12. You shouldn’t wash your hair often: Haba. When we are not dirty people. Water is really good for the hair so washing is encouraged. At least once a week. You can cowash or just water wash within the week. Washing gets rid of dirt, product buildup,  dust etc which now helps our scalp to breathe and encourage hair growth. So please,  wash your hair.
